What Is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is one of the most effective methods for fat reduction. It also has fewer side effects than some of the other procedures used to remove visible fat bulges, making it a popular choice for people who want to get rid of stubborn fat without having to miss work or arrange for someone to help them with childcare, household chores and other activities.
CoolSculpting treatments were developed based on the principle of cryolipolysis. In simple terms, cryolipolysis is the use of cold temperatures to kill fat cells. When cold energy is applied to the target area, lipids inside the fat cells freeze, causing the treated fat cells to break down. As the fat cells break down, the components are eliminated from your body via the lymphatic system, which is made up of blood vessels, lymph nodes and other tissues. Removing dead fat cells from the body helps get rid of stubborn fat in a way that diet and exercise just can’t accomplish.
When this cold energy is administered, it affects only the fat cells. There’s no damage to the skin or muscles, making it easier than ever to remove excess fat without needing several weeks to recover.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?
CoolSculpting uses a specialized device that’s been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). During a CoolSculpting treatment, the device delivers controlled cooling to the target area. When exposed to intense cold, the contents of the fat cells crystallize, causing the cells to die. Your body’s immune system processes these treated fat cells so they can be eliminated in the urine. This is what makes CoolSculpting so effective. While diet and exercise only shrink fat cells, CoolSculpting eliminates them, which means they can’t continue taking up space.
CoolSculpting helps with fat reduction in the following areas of the body:
- Abdomen
- Inner and outer thighs
- Upper arms
- Under the chin
- “Muffin top”
- “Love handles”
The Initial Consultation
Before you get a CoolSculpting treatment, you’ll meet with one of our providers to discuss your goals and let them know if you have any medical conditions that would preclude you from having CoolSculpting for fat reduction. If you’re a good candidate for CoolSculpting, we’ll develop a customized plan that lists your target areas and explains how many sessions you’ll need to achieve the desired result. While some people need just one session for a small target area, others want to target multiple parts of the body, which requires multiple sessions.
A provider will also explain what you can expect during treatment and what kind of results you can expect from CoolSculpting. It’s important to remember that CoolSculpting is different from a fat removal procedure like liposuction. Rather than removing large amounts of excess fat, we’ll be helping you achieve fat reduction by freezing the fat cells in the target area. Your body will eventually eliminate those frozen fat cells, resulting in a more toned appearance.
What To Expect During a CoolSculpting Session
Since CoolSculpting is noninvasive, the treatment process is fairly simple. When you’re ready, a gel pad and applicator are applied to the treatment site. The applicator is what allows the cold energy to reach your fat cells. During the session, a treatment provider will pass the CoolSculpting device over your skin. You may feel a mild pulling sensation during this process, but you shouldn’t feel any significant pain.
After the provider is done passing the device over the treatment site, they may massage the area gently to break up the crystallized fat cells and make it easier for your body to eliminate them. You should plan for your treatment to take anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the size of the area you’re targeting. You may also want to bring a book or something else to keep you occupied during the treatment session. Because CoolSculpting causes minimal discomfort, many people use the time to take a nap or just relax and enjoy not having to worry about work for a while.
